Pumped Up "Kicks"
Reviewed by Shannon Preece
Since the genre exploded with the rise of Mortal Kombat, there’s now no shortage of them. Especially with the vivid colours, wonderfully picked characters, nice controls and terrific soundtrack, it checks all the boxes to make it a good game. Sure, it might not be the best fighting game and it doesn’t have the best graphics, but this frantic and great take on the genre has what it takes to be a worthy competitor to Mortal Kombat.
Doubtless we have seen our fair share of meme games. But on sea-level, the martial arts, 3D characters and stages give it a kickstart. It’s kept most of the modes like in M.U.G.E.N. and other fighting games like so. On the contrary, it’s a little different, more intense and sharper than M.U.G.E.N. than you’d expect. Sans, Papyrus, Spongebob and Shrek have some moves that deal more damage than others while button mashing. Alternatively, all 18 characters have combos of attacks. Some combos can deal a ton of damage, even at their lowest quality which can lead to some interesting results. And after performing these combos, with most characters, you’ll be able to unleash a flurry of attacks which can even be fatal. Still, these combos are fun to use and resemble the brutal action scene from The Little Panda Fighter. Especially when combined with the AI. The AI is intelligent, and it feels like you have no control over the environment which make each moment more panicked than the last. There is an option for casual players where you can decrease the difficulty. But it can get frustrating and funny while there’s a fair amount of fighters clipping.
Meme Fighter is the meme game I’ve been waiting for. Great controls, cool soundtrack, fighters from the most beloved memes of all time make it a game that’s a nice and sometimes terrifying experience. Even though there’s some annoying and funny moments from clipping, It still doesn’t take away the fact that it’s a great game and will always be for a long time to come.
